Modern Patchwork Doll Quilt

Posted on: September 8th, 2022 by Lorna McMahon

Monday was a holiday here. Labour Day.

I have four quilts that are almost finished and just need the binding stitched to the fronts. And I have one quilt basted and ready for quilting. And yet here I was….

Caving to the irresistible urge to make a dolly quilt.

I wanted to just have fun. Sorting through my scrap buckets, I came up with a variety of 2.5″ squares and 2″ border strips. Then I found the Tula for the backing.

It’s not like me to choose purple, but I was feeling it, sew I went with it!

I did not use batting between the layers, but opted instead for a piece of flannel, for less stiffness in the finished product and to allow for a nicer drape.

I sewed 1/4″ around the edges with right sides facing, but left a hole for turning, then topstitched all around. This makes a bindingless finish.

Echo quilted along the horizontal seams.

As you can see… I was right in the middle of my work, when the urge to play struck me.

Looks like I was really just making a mess!

My little purple patchwork doll quilt finished at 19″ x 21″

Sometimes you just got to get back to the basics and do some simple piecing for some simple pleasure. I sure enjoyed making this little patchwork quilt for my dolly!

Your dolly quilt is absolutely adorable! It’s always a good idea to take a break and do something just for the fun of it 😊
