MOD Bear Paw QAL – Constructing the Big Bear blocks
Today’s post is to provide the instructions for constructing the Big Bear blocks.
I have decided to make a BABY quilt size.
Step 1 – 5 were covered in the previous post: Constructing the Bear Paw blocks.
Step 6: Sew the PAW UNITS to the sides of the Background (C) rectangles. Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (A) square to the end of the remaining CROSS SASHING UNIT. Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (D) square to the Background (E) rectangle. Use the STOP method to add the Dark Brown (J) square to the Light Brown (G) rectangle. Sew this (GJ) unit between a Light Brown (A) square and a Light Brown (F) rectangle. Arrange the pieces as shown. Sew the CROSS SASHING UNIT onto the PAIR OF PAWS UNIT. For the bottom row, sew the PAW UNIT to the Background (C) rectangle. Sew the (ED) unit to the (AGJF) unit. Sew them together to complete the bottom row and sew this to the bottom of the CROSS SASHING UNIT to complete the block.
Step 9: Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (A) square on the end of the Background (L) rectangle. Use the STOP method to add the Background (J) squares on the corners of the Light Brown (M) and (N) rectangles. Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (J) squares on the corners of the Dark Brown (M) rectangle. Sew the Dark Brown (A) square between the Light Brown (C) rectangles. Sew the Background (G) rectangle to the Dark Brown (G) rectangle. Along with the Light Brown (O) rectangle, sew the pieces together as shown.
Step 10: Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (M) rectangles on the ends of the Background (K) rectangle. Sew the Dark Brown (A) square between the Light Brown (C) rectangles. Along with the Light Brown (O) and (R) rectangles, sew the pieces together as shown.
Step 11: Sew the Background (C) rectangle on the side of a PAW UNIT. Use the STOP method to add the Light Brown (U) rectangle on the end. Sew the Dark Brown (A) square between the Light Brown (C) rectangles. Use the STOP method to add the Background (A) square on the end. Along with the Light Brown (R) rectangle, sew the pieces together as shown.
Step 13: Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of the Grey (A) squares. This is your guide line. Place the Grey (A) squares on the Light Brown (A) squares. Sew a ¼” seam on EACH SIDE the blue line from edge to edge, as shown in red. Cut along the blue guide line. Press the seams open and trim each of the resulting Half Square Triangles (HST) to 1”. Sew them together, as shown, and add the Grey (S) rectangle to the bottom.

This is such an awesome quilt design, I am enjoying seeing it come together!
Your pattern is wonderful! And it's such a temptation from the projects that have deadlines… so I'm using it as a leader/ender project. But that bear just wants to take over!
I can not wait to see this one finished!! Might just have to go back and make one!
Such a cute pattern.
