Background can be light or dark. Light Brown is the main fabric for the Bear Paw blocks and the Big Bear. Dark Brown is the darker portion of the Big Bear, the cornerstones within the Bear Paw blocks, the thin first border, and the binding. Grey is the sashing between the blocks and the Paw Prints in the outside border.
For my quilt I am planning to use up some VERY old stash fabrics to make the BABY size 39″ x 47″. These fabrics have been with me SO LONG that they are all selections from my “pre-wash before using” days. The bright blue fabric will be for the backing and the tone on tone white hexagon print will be the background. The light blue paw prints will be the main fabric for the Bear Paw blocks and the Big Bear and the dark blue paw prints will be the darker portion of the Big Bear and also the cornerstones within the Bear Paw blocks.
Now, for the sashing between the blocks….. That’s where I am having trouble making up my mind. Although I recommend you avoid the use of a directional print, I could use the stripe print. And after uploading cropped images of these fabrics into my EQ7, this is what it would look SOMETHING like.

This stripe really doesn’t suit me and kinda hurts my eyes. But after trying about 5 other blue based prints, I have settled on using this cute farm print instead.

Ooh!!! I can't wait to do this! I'm going to try really hard to keep up! 🐻
So looking forward to this! Thank you Lorna, for the sew along fun :)!
Well Lorna: I'm trying to figure out if I can do some kind of scaled down version of this. I'll have to put my thinking cap on.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful pattern with us! It is so clever and I love it! Don't know how you do it, but please keep on designing!!
This is a gorgeous quilt and is going to be a fun quilt along for everyone! You are so generous and giving of your talent, skills and creativity. XO
Looking forward to doing this QAL. It's great to have smaller options, I find I actually FINISH the smaller quilts. Thank you for taking the time to host Bear Paws and for generously sharing the pattern 🙂
All of your color ways are so nice! I'm short on time, but am looking forward to everyone's progress!
I wanted to stop by and thank you for supporting the Pets on Quilts blog hop. It's one of the very best shows and sponsors like you make it possible. I'm a new quilter and I just have, and know I will, make your dog quilt for my pit bull and boxer. Everytime I look at my boxer I think how much he looks like your pattern.xx, Carol
I have so many quilts going now and 6 quilt kits looking me in the face, but I have loved this pattern from the first time I saw it. Maybe I can squeeze some time in to do it. 🙂 Will this quilt along be on your blog for future use if I can't manage to find time now?
I totally want to make one of these, but can't decide on the fabric yet.I know my bear will be a black bear, but the rest is still undecided.UGH! Well, I have time to think about it.
Thanks a million Lorna for this. Doing 2 QALs at the moment but fitting this in too – can't resist!
Your quilts are just what I like to make!! Every one is do-able. I'm really looking forward to this sew-along.
This is so cool. I especially like the way the bear appears to be crawling through the sashing 'window'. So creative. The farm print is perfect. Also, I noticed you mentioned your 'days of prewashing'. So does this mean you don't prewash? Why is that? I'm curious.
Time to pick out some fabrics 🙂
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful pattern. I am going to try to eek out some time to make it too.
Love the black and green version. Very cool and I love that little print with the farm motifs. A perfect fit for you!!!! Wish I had time for the QAL, but it's not going to happen. Can't wait to see the finished quilts.
I have ordered some fabric for this quilt. I have loved this pattern since the first time you showed it. My husband is especially fond of bears so I am going to make him the lap quilt size for cozying while watching tv! He is going to be so SURPRISED that I am actually going to do something instead of just reading about it!Thanks so much for this sew along encouragement!
My husband really likes this pattern and so I will be attempting to follow along. I am a beginning again level quilter so I progress really slow. This is a wonderful pattern and you are so generous to give it to us free via this quilt along. Thank you.
