Ay, Chihuahua!!!

Posted on: August 5th, 2016 by Lorna McMahon

As soon as I put out the call for pattern testers, I knew that there was one pattern in the mix that I would not be able to resist making for myself. And that was the Ay, Chihuahua!!!! Not only is this fun to make…. It’s really fun to say!

I had a reader contact me after seeing the Forest Friends quilt pattern online. And they were wondering if I could adjust the deer block to make a cute little Chihuahua block. Well…. One thing led to another. And I fell in love!

After coming up with the basic doggie face, I added the bow tie. And then I thought of how fun it would be to make these boy doggies surrounding a girl doggie. For her, I transferred the bow to the top of her head and added a little collar.

I was visiting at my LQS in Newton, Ontario last week and happened across the Blossom collection by Northcott Fabrics. I knew that the dotty fabric would be perfect for the background. Then I chose the green print for the binding and the boy doggie bows.

And this sweet floral print for the backing. This quilt finished a little wider than the width of fabric, so I added a plain grey strip along one side. I’m telling you….. It was lined up straight when I basted, but ended up off kilter by the time the quilting was finished. Looks like I planned it that way?

Just like with the Black Birds in Blue quilt I shared last week, I used a Light Grey Omni from Superior Threads, both on top and in the bobbin. Of course the quilting is organic wavy lines made using my walking foot. Zoom! Zoom!

I actually pieced the mini quilt version first. For this one, I felt a bright yellow background would be a nice contrast to the blue bows and binding.

I had this colourful dotty print left over from another project and used it for the backing. I added two corner tabs for hanging, before applying the binding.

This was quilted using plain white Guetterman thread in tighter wavy lines.

The “Ay, Chihuahua baby quilt finished at 44” x 50″

and was the 7th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels

The “Ay, Chihuahua mini quilt finished at 17” x 19″
