My Pet Hamster quilt finishes

Posted on: May 27th, 2016 by Lorna McMahon
Just in time to pay tribute to the Royals newest family member…..
It’s the My Pet Hamster quilt.

I was beyond happy to put the final stitch in the binding of this playful finish on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, when I returned to work on the Super Mini quilt the next day….

My iron died a horrible death. Alas, I tried everything. Took it apart and redid the wiring. But it was all to no avail. Now what????!!!!!! ACKKKKK!

The fabrics are all from Northcott Fabrics’ Artisan Spirit Ambience collections and the solids are from their Color Works collection. The background and the backing are the same print in two different colourways. I am truly smitten with the Ambience collection, love how the prints all coordinate together from one colourway to another, and how the prints can tend to read like a solid. You see, I have a lot of trouble coordinating prints and tend to stick to solids because of it.

This photo below is on my front yard, which is now looking a lot more like winter is finally over. I have been taking photos of my finishes hanging from the tree house lately because these quilts are too long to get a full front shot on the old hay wagon. But the lighting is poor beneath the tree. These photos below give a truer sense of the colours of the fabrics.

The edge to edge horizontal quilting was done using my signature wavy lines. I chose a variegated green from Superior Threads for the top and Omni in light gray for the bottom. I am so pleased with the brightness and shine of that green on top! I was tempted to use my favourite blue variegated thread, but was afraid of running out as that spool is low.

The My Pet Hamster pattern provides instructions for making six different quilt sizes and two different block sizes. The full size hamster blocks finish at 10″ wide by 9″ tall and the half size blocks finish at 5″ wide by 4.5″ tall. A 14″ by 13″ mini quilt can be made using one full size block or by using 4 half size blocks. Using the full size blocks, you can also make:
Crib Quilt using 11 full size blocks finishes at 38″ x 46″
Lap Quilt using 28 full size blocks finishes at 62″ x 68″
Twin Quilt using 38 full size blocks finishes at 62″ x 90″
Full Quilt using 53 full size blocks finishes at 86″ x 90″
My Pet Hamster is a 7 page pdf quilt pattern and is a modern minimalist design made using traditional piecing methods. No templates. No paper piecing. Only simple straight line sewing and diagonal seams. Easy to follow instructions are provided for every step of the way!

My Pet Hamster Crib quilt finishes at 38″ x 46″

you have given me a huge smile after a worrying week. Hugh has a hamstring sprain, ( partial tear the Dr at the hospital thought), so on crutches once again, not driving, or really doing much at all. Then those sweet faces all lined up to grin at me, and suddenly I am feeling so much happier. I like the close ups showing the wavy quilting lines, and I can say, truly, this is a real winner.

  2. These are just so cute with their puffy and full little cheeks. It reminds me of my niece whom I had the delight to visit with in the beginning of May. LOL 2.5 year olds can fit more in their mouth than I expected! I agree that prints that read as solids are amazing and such a help for me. Congratulations on the finish and I hope you find an iron solution!

I didn't think you get cuter than the litter of puppy dogs but I have to admit this is up there on the cute scale – their little puffy faces are brilliant! I cans see this as a perfect baby present!

  4. The hamsters are adorable and I think your fabric choice is perfect for these cute fellows.

  5. Karen says:

Thoser hamsters are sew very cute! I highly recommend the Panasonic 360 cordless iron as your new best friend. I love mine and even bought a back up. They are pricey, but I got both of mine for a great price on ebay slightly used.

Sorry that your iron died, I hope you find a new one soon. That happened to me recently and I couldn't sew without it! These hamsters make me smile, I love the color of the background fabric!

  11. Love, love your hamster quilts and can't wait to make one too. So sorry to hear about your iron – take a peek in Canadian Tire store – I was surprised at their selection. That is where I found mine.

OMGosh, these cannot be any cuter! And those pink hamsters! I am in love!! You amaze me with all these precious faces you create!Sorry about your iron. You don't have a spare, or 2 or 3 spares like me? LOL!

  13. Tish Stemple says:

I just love those chubby cheeks against that turquoise back ground. It makes me smile. Isn't it nice to see the green grass background for a change. Hope the weather is warming up nicely where you live.

  14. DuAnne says:

Hamster is so darling. Love the foxes you had not long ago too. Sorry about your Iron! Are you in Canada? Then can you get an iron there that doesn't automatically turn off? I want to be the boss of my iron and here, they have control!

  17. These are so adorable!! So sorry about your iron!! 🙂

  18. Jen says:

Can you believe I have never done a wavy quilt line? I am so inspired. I have an offset diamond I am working on and I was planning to just stitch around each diamond in the ditch, but this just might be the quilt to try the edge to edge lines.

  19. Carla says:

I always love what you do. Super sweet quilts.

  20. Lara B. says:

Very, very cute Lorna! I love that you always present us with so many fun color options for your quilt patterns, plus all the different size options you offer too. Love the pink hamsters and can just picture a little girl doing cartwheels of delight over that quilt! Very sorry about the untimely death of your iron. Maybe you could find an iron manufacturing sponsor and test drive a new one?

  21. I've never been a hamster person but these are so so cute. I especially like the gray one with one white cheek.

  22. Cheryl says:

I love the hamsters puffy and full little cheeks! I had a Russian dwarf hamster when I was young and I think he could almost fit his body weight in his checks! The pattern is adorable.

  23. Another home run, I love the variations between the different hamsters!

  24. JanineMarie says:

Ha! I think most of my fabric stash is prints that read as solids. Thanks for clarifying why! I'm still giggling looking at your chubby cheeked hamsters, and it goes without saying that I love the solid-ish prints. RIP to your iron. Hope you find a new one that makes you happy.

Hamsters! Of course! Love them 🙂
