Happy Turtle Zippered Pillow
Happy Turtle. Just Moseying.
This little turtle pillow was made using a block from my Elephant Parade pattern. I just upped the size by 1.5 and added borders around the block to fit this 13″ x 20″ pillow form. My niece was coming for a visit from Wisconsin and I wanted to make her something that would be both useful and pretty. I knew that she was very fond of turtles. But I had no idea what her favourite colours were. So I just dug into my stash to find some happy prints!
In all the times I have used applique on a project, I have been leery of quilting over the actual applique shapes. But no more.
For the back and binding, I chose this Garden Aquarella from the Naturella collection by Art Gallery Fabrics that I purchased back in June from Canadian National Fabric for a steal. It really is a beautiful print, goes so well with the fabrics used in the front, and it is so soft!
The zipper is hidden beneath this flap on the back.
It’s a long train ride home again. It’s nice to know there will be a Happy Turtle to keep my niece company on the way. And to help make the trip that much more comfortable!
Then he can sit on her bed at home. And remind her of her good times spent with family this summer!

Very cute pillow, Lorna! Love the way you made the block. And a very cute idea for a gift 🙂
Quite adorable, Lorna! I like how the zipper is hidden under the flap
Love the colours of this cushion and the turtle is so cute – ALL your animals are cute 🙂
Love it Lorna! I have just the person to make one of these for too!
Such bright & happy colors! I know the turtle will have a new best friend. I've been surprised that even something as simple as a travel pillow can mean so much. I have never made one with a zipper closing in the back and love the hidden flap. May have to add this to my try it next time! May I grab the picture and put a link on my blog?
I don't have a hard time quilting over my appliqué (maybe because I don't do much of it!), but do have a hard time quilting through the faces (particularly the eyes!) of any critters in the pattern or print!
Adorable and completely perfect! Love the hidden zipper idea. I've already got too many throw pillows, but I might re-cover some of them; the turtle would be a great bit of whimsy to brighten up my livingroom.
This is adorable – love the fun colors. This is making me want to make another turtle with different colors. I must resist.
this is adorable. I love the colors. and the back is wonderful. I love the hidden zipper. how much extra fabric did you add to cover the zipper?
She is going to love this! The colors are bright and happy…perfect for any little girl!
Just love those colours- especially the yellow!
So cheery and sweet Lorna! Your niece is going to love her pillow. It really will be handy for the train ride home too. I love the way the back fabric coordinates and love that peppy green zipper hiding under the flap.
What a sweet aunt you are. This turtle pillow is sure to cheer her and remind her of you.
What an adorable turtle. I panicked for a moment because I thought I had missed a new animal. So glad you said it was from Elephant Parade.
Your Turtle pillow is so delightful and pretty! I love the bright and happy colors! I am sure your niece adores it!Susie
You turtle is just too stinking cute! Love the tropical colors.
What a fun pillow! (And I bet it came in handy on the ride home.) I just read on Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville blog the other day that quilting through appliques is actually good for them. Should the quilt become a cherished antique, the quilting stabilizes the applique so it doesn't fall apart over time. Think of all your applique quilts lasting forever, now!
Adorable! Love the fabric you chose for the back of the pillow too!
Happy indeed! What a lucky girl!
That turtle is just the cutest and it looks great on that pillow!
Bright, fun and completely adorable……oh and huggable too.
