Pretty Piggy and Corn Cob – quilt blocks tutorial

For each Pretty Piggy block you will need:

Light Pink
2 @ 1.5″ x 3.5″
6 @ 1.5″ square
2 @ 1.5″ x 6.5″
2 @ 1.5″ x 2.5″
2 @ 0.75″ x 1.25″
1 @ 1.25″ x 2.5″
1 @ 2.75″ x 4.5″

Dark Pink
4 @ 1.5″ x 2.5″
1 @ 1.5″ x 4.5″
1 @ 2″ x 4.5″
3 @ 1″ x 1.5″

Background
4 @ 1.5″ square
2 @ 2.5″ x 5.5″
1 @ 2.5″ x 4.5″
2 @ 2.5″ square

Black
2 @ 1.25″ square
2 @ 1″ square

Step 1:  Take 2 Background @ 1.5″ squares and place them on the bottom ends of 2 Light Pink @ 1.5″ x 3.5″ rectangles.  Sew along the diagonal and trim 1/4″ seam.  Press the seams open.  Take 2 Light Pink @ 1.5″ squares and sew them onto the ends of 2 Dark Pink @ 1.5″ x 2.5″ rectangles.  Take 2 more Light Pink @ 1.5″ squares and place them on the bottom ends of the Dark Pink rectangles.  Sew along the diagonal and trim 1/4″ seam.  Press the seams open.

Step 2:  Take the units made in the previous step and sew them together.  Also take 2 Background @ 2.5″ x 5.5″ rectangles and sew them onto the bottoms.  Press the seams open.

Step 3:  Take 2 Dark Pink @ 1.5″ x 2.5″ rectangles and place them on the top ends of 2 Light Pink @ 1.5″ x 6.5″ rectangles.  Sew along the diagonal and trim 1/4″ seam.  Press the seams open.  Take 2 Light Pink @ 1.5″ x 2.5″ rectangles and place them on the top ends of 2 Dark Pink @ 1.5″ x 2.5″ rectangles.  Sew along the diagonal and trim 1/4″ seam.  Press the seams open. Take 2 Background @ 1.5″ squares and place them on the ends of the Light Pink rectangles.  Sew along the diagonal and trim 1/4″ seam.  Press the seams open.

Step 4:  Take 2 Light Pink @ .75″ x 1.25″ rectangles, 2 Black @ 1.25″ squares and 1 Light Pink @ 1.25″ x 2.5″ rectangle.  Sew them together and press the seams open.  Also take 2 Light Pink @ 1.5″ squares and place them on the top corners of 1 Dark Pink @ 2″ x 4.5″ rectangle.  Sew along the diagonal and trim 1/4″ seam.  Press the seams open.  For the nostrils, take 3 Dark Pink 1″ x 1.5″ rectangles and 2 Black @ 1″ squares.  Sew them together and press the seams open.  To make the face unit, take 1 Background @ 2.5″ x 4.5″ rectangle, 1 Light Pink @ 2.75″ x 4.5″ rectangle, the parts made in the beginning of this step and 1 Dark Pink @ 1.5″ x 4.5″ rectangle.  Sew them together and press the seams open.

Step 5:  Take the units made in Step 3 and sew them onto the sides of the face unit made in Step 4.  Press the seams open.  Take 2 Background 2.5″ squares and place them on the bottom corners of the face.  Sew along the diagonal and trim 1/4″ seam.  Press the seams open.  Take the units made in Step 2 and sew them onto the sides of the face unit.  Press the seams open.

For each Corn Cob block you will need:

Light Yellow
2 WOF strips @ 1.5″ (if using fat quarters, cut 3 strips)

Dark Yellow
2 WOF strips @ 1.5″ (if using fat quarters, cut 3 strips)

Background
6 @ 1.5″ square

Green
1 @ 1.5″ square

Step 1: Take 1 WOF Dark Yellow strip @ 1.5″ wide and 1 WOF Light Yellow strip @ 1.5″ wide and join them by sewing along the length.  Press the seam open.

Step 2:  Cut the unit in half.

Step 3:  Cut the remaining 1 WOF Dark Yellow strip @ 1.5″ wide and 1 WOF Light Yellow strip @ 1.5″ wide into half lengths.

Step 4:  Sew 1 half length Light Yellow strip @ 1.5″ wide onto the side of one unit and 1 half length Dark Yellow strip @ 1.5″ wide onto the side of the other unit.  Press the seams open.

Step 5:  Subcut each of the units into 1.5″ wide segments.  Arrange the 1.5″ wide segments as shown and sew them together.  Press the seams open.  Take your 4 Background @ 1.5″ squares and place them on the corners.  Sew along the diagonal and trim 1/4″ seam.  Press the seams open.

Step 6:  Take your 2 Background @ 1.5″ squares and 1 Green @ 1.5″ squares.  Sew them together and press the seams open.  Sew them onto the end of the corn cob and press the seam open.

Here are some suggestions for uses of the Pretty Piggy quilt block, with or without the Corn Cob block.  Make a cute little mug rug or hot pot mat, place mats or a table runner.  Even a wall hanging for your kitchen.
