WoW-E! {redo} in Northcott ColorWorks Solids

Posted on: January 2nd, 2015 by Lorna McMahon

Thanks to the amazing popularity of the WoW-E! quilt blocks I have been sharing on social media (facebook and instagram), I could not resist finishing the first quilt one day…. And soon starting this next one!

This remake of the WoW-E! quilt was made using solids from the ColorWorks Premium Solid 9000 collection by Northcott Fabrics.  The colours were chosen to match this cute Woodland Friends flannel backing.

This time I changed things up by using only 12 blocks.  Then added a multiple mitered border to make this a crib size quilt.  My multiple mitered border tutorial can be found here.

I put the completed blocks up on my design wall.  And then switched them around a bit.  But I liked the first layout best.  So I switched them back!

When it came time for the quilting, Aunt Elna and I decided to take on a spiral.  It has been a while since using this method last.  But this is the first time using a single spiral.

A single spiral makes quite a statement.  The tricky part is to get the beginning of the spiral to look good.  I traced a circle around the cornerstone using a pencil.  Then quilted, one stitch at a time, until there was a quarter inch gap around the circle.  From there the going gets easier as you continue the spiral out to the edges of the quilt.

This quilt finish was the 22nd use of my 100 labels ordered from

You can design your own labels, too!  Click here!

This WoW-E! Woodland Friends baby quilt finished at approximately 39″ x 49″ and is now listed with my Quilts for Sale in my Etsy shop.  The WoW-E! pattern is available for sale in my NEW Pattern Store here.

  1. Congratulations on another finish, Lorna! You have been so busy! I really like how you color matched to the backing print, and the spiral quilting really looks fabulous.

Yay! Congrats on another beautiful quilt. It's fun to see another version of this pattern. The possibilities are endless! I love the spiral quilting. I did a bazillion of them on a recent quilt, and you are absolutely right about the beginning. The starting is the hard part, but then it is smooth sailing after that.

  3. This came out beautifully, and isn't it fun to have a finish so early in the year? It really makes you want to keep that momentum going and sew, sew, sew!

  4. Mara says:

    Really beautiful Lorna!

  5. Beautiful! I swear I learn something new every time I come to your site 😉 quilting a continuous circle in the center and then going off of that circle is just plain genius!! I've never seen it done that way before and have always struggled with trying to get that center spiral to look even a little bit passable. Thanks for a major aha moment 😀

  6. This quilt pattern really is stunning! Love the black accents! It makes the colors shine!

  7. I really like the spiral quilting – neat and such a lovely finish. I love that pattern

  8. PegP says:

Looks awesome Lorna! Are you just using the walking foot for the spiral?

  9. Carla says:

Another stunner! Well done. That spiral adds the perfect touch

  10. The quilting is perfect on this quilt! I love the pattern, the fabric…oh just everything. Is it as wonderful as I think it is to explore a quilt pattern a second time with different fabrics? There's a couple I'd like to go and do again but I have too many quilt pattern ideas to do in my head to consider revisitng old patterns!

I am so in love with this little bright bundle!! The quilting is amazing…amazing and has been on my quilting list for years! One day Lorna…one day!

It's so beautiful! I love it. I want one:-)

  13. Clumsy Chord says:

It looks really great! I love the spiral quilting — I haven't quite talked myself into trying that one yet. (Ugh. I don't know what's going on, by blogger/blogspot won't let me make openID comments any more and I've tried in both Firefox and Chrome. It seems like something happening with the Captcha thing, where it wants me to fill it out, but it's hidden in some way so that I can't access it. I hate logging in with Google – this is Kristel from anyway!)

  14. Ioleen says:

    Love the spiral quilting.

  15. I love everything about this quilt- it's so bright and fresh! Love that backing fabric and the quilting works really well too!

  16. Vera says:

I like this one even better due to quilting 🙂 Well done!

  17. Jasmine says:

Awesome! I love the borders. I sometimes think I spend too much time rearranging things on my design wall. I explained to my niece this morning about one quilt that I made sure all the pine trees pointed up, because that is how trees grow. In 18 months of use no one even noticed!

  18. I really like the colors and the spiral quilting. That type of quilting is on my to do list for 2015. Another great quilt.Debbie

  19. Lovely quilt and colors – love those bold colors.

Amazing! Love the spiral quilting too – that's going on my list of new things to try in 2015!

  26. Love it! I can't decide which color way I like better! They are both so fresh and happy, but yet completely different! Great job!

  27. Love your spiral! There are so many things I love about this quilt … so many!

  28. The pop of color, the brightness and crisp feel of that quilt and of course that QUILTING of the spiral, I think is perfect for this quilt! Your talent amazes me Lorna!
